City of Nashua Speeds Public Health Surveys and Rapid Needs Assessments With Capturx Software and Digital Pens

Automated Data Collection Following CDC's CASPER Protocol to Be Showcased at the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists Conference

SEATTLE, WA and PITTSBURGH, PA--(Marketwire - Jun 13, 2011) - Adapx, the company that is changing the way field teams collect data and collaborate, today announced that its Capturx software for field data collection with digital pens will be featured in the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Conference in Pittsburgh as part of the "Surveillance / Informatics I Session" on June 15, 2011. The session will be led by Ashley Conley, Epidemiologist for the City of Nashua, New Hampshire's Division of Public Health and Community Services, who will share experiences and best practices for collecting and analyzing data using digital pens and following the Center for Disease Control's newly developed Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) protocol.

The City of Nashua used Capturx software for digital pens in a recent community health assessment following the CASPER protocol, which provides a standardized approach for Epidemiologists and other Public Health professionals to collect pertinent health information during a large-scale emergency or natural disaster. Teams canvassed neighborhoods to survey residents and collect public health data on paper forms with some teams using digital pens and others using ordinary pens. The digital pens instantly digitized the handwritten data, which was later automatically integrated into Excel for analysis and reporting without time-consuming manual data entry.

"The teams found the pens easy to use for the health surveys, since they require almost no user training," said Ashley Conley, Epidemiologist for the City of Nashua, New Hampshire's Division of Public Health and Community Services. "The group using Capturx downloaded and reviewed the data from the pens into Excel in a matter of minutes, whereas the data entry and review for the team using normal pen and paper took hours. In public health emergencies, timely access to data is critical for analysis, reporting, and action."

How Capturx Works:
With Capturx, survey teams collect data with familiar paper forms and route maps. When the documents are printed from Excel or ArcGIS, Capturx software creates unique digital watermarks in the background of each sheet which are tracked by the digital pen as it writes. As teams fill out the health surveys and mark which homes they've visited on the maps, the digital pen creates a normal ink record on paper while also making a digital copy and recording the watermark which are stored on the pen's memory.

When the pens are connected to PCs, all the recorded data is integrated into the original Microsoft Office Excel files and ArcGIS map databases as data tables and map objects. The form data is available in the original handwriting and as converted text which can be easily aggregated for quick reporting, key word search, and archiving. The pens also have Bluetooth, so teams with Bluetooth-enabled cell phones can instantly transmit the data from the field directly to the back office.

The "Surveillance / Informatics I Session" at the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Conference in Pittsburgh will cover details and best practices about using digital pens as part of the rapids needs assessments following the CASPER protocol. The actual results of Nashua's 2010 Community Health Assessment will be presented during the Community Health Assessment Conference at the Nashua Community College Auditorium on June 28th, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
