Many answers to Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop questions can be found here in the User Guide.
Q: When I save edits, Capturx for ArcGIS stops the edit sessions.
A: This is a known issue that will be addressed in the next version. Until that release, either re-open the edit-session on the target data-source and continue editing or deselect the Capturx extension.
Q: Why do I get a SQL error when I try to install or use the Capturx extension after I have not used it for a period of time?
A: This can result from having your computer or SQL DB files set for compression. To ensure your SQL DB files are not compressed:
1. Select the database folder causing the problem.
2. Make sure the Compress Folder option is unchecked.
3. Reboot your system and try installing or using the Capturx extension again.
If the problem continues, contact Adapx technical support for help.

Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop uses the default printer selected for the ArcGIS application. To select the printer you want, you need to change the default printer for the ArcGIS application you are using.
You might not have used the print icon on the Capturx for ArcGIS extension toolbar (see the Printing Your Map and Legend section of the user manual). If you don’t use the Capturx printing function, pattern will not be added to the page. You can see that pattern has been added if you examine closely the white spaces that appear in the Layout View. If pattern is not on the page, no digital ink will be collected in your pen and, consequently, changes won’t appear on your map.
This could occur for at two reasons:
1. ArcGIS 9.2 desktop is not installed on your computer. To fix this problem, install the ArcGIS desktop application before you install Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop.
2. The installation may fail if ArcGIS 9.2 desktop is installed, but the Dot Net components from Microsoft are not installed. If this occurred, you will see the Adapx dialogue box:
“ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 with .Net support not found on this system. Capturx built for ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop or later with .Net support to be installed"
Once this occurs, the installation of the Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop will roll back. To correct this situation, you will need to:
- Go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Modify.
- From Options dialogue, select the .Net Support component.
- Select Next to complete the Installation.
Once this is done install Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop again.

If you have administrative privileges for Vista, you can do the following:
A. In the bottom left of the computer screen, right click on the windows icon and select "Explore".
B. Navigate to your program files directory (normally found on the C:\ drive).
C. Navigate to the Adapx\Penx\1.0 directory (ex. C:\Program Files\Adapx\Penx\1.0) If you specified a different directory when you installed the application, use that directory.
- Right click on the PenxCPL.exe file
- Select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab at the top of the properties window
- At the bottom of the compatibility area you will see a section called "Privilege Level"
- Make sure the box "Run this program as Administrator" is checked. If it was not, then check it, then hit the APPLY button, restart the computer, and give it another try.
If you are not prompted to run the PenxCPL with administrative privileges, repeat the above process again.
When the system starts, I see a dialogue box that says PenxCPL has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience… What’s wrong?
Most probably, the Microsoft .net frameworks are not installed on you PC or have been corrupted.

Printing Error reads: “internal error while generating pattern installation may be corrupted”
This is most likely caused because you're drawing size requested is slightly larger than our standard sizes. To work around this issue resize your drawing to fall within the A0, A2 or A4 sizes.
I can create polygon features in ArcMap, change the text in their label field, and see the label in ArcMap. But the same kind of polygon features I created using Capturx for ArcGIS don’t show any labels, even after I set their label text.
A: To avoid this problem, draw your polygon features on the printed map in a clockwise direction.
I get a “Clear ink not processed due to error”. What does this mean?
This error will occur if an icon was not picked or improperly picked before inking. It means that there are ink strokes recorded but since no action preceded the ink, the system doesn’t know what to do with the ink.
The polygon features I create using Capturx for ArcGIS are rendered in a strange way, especially when I zoom in. The fill color I would expect to see inside the polygon shape appears on the outside of the shape, covering the map, and the inside of the polygon is not filled in.
A: To avoid this problem, draw your polygon features on the printed map in a clockwise direction.
I write on a printed map, dock the pen, and the data remains on the pen?
The most likely cause is that you are downloading to a PC that was not used print the map. If you have this problem, the solution is to dock the pen to the PC that generated the printed map. You can identify the PC by looking at the small print at the edge of the map. In landscape, it will appear on the lower right corner. In portrait, it will appear on the lower left side of the printed page.
My features and annotations are placed a short distance from where I drew them on the printed map. Is there a way to correct this problem?
A: This can be caused by a known ArcMap application issue that affects the printed map’s registration accuracy. This can happen if you resize the map frame manually in layout view before printing (by dragging an edge of the map frame). To correct this issue:
1. Using the Window menu, open the table of contents window if it is closed.
2. Select the Map name and double click on it within the table of contents window. This will open a dialogue box.
3. Select the Data Frame tab and choose Fixed Extent on the radio control button for Extent.
4. Click Apply and OK.
When you print your map again, the placement of the features on the map should improve.
