Capturx for ArcGIS FAQ Print Version
A: You can create data with Capturx for ArcGIS even if it is stored in ArcSDE provided that:
- All datasets in the legend of the printed map are ‘registered as versioned’
- Map is printed from ArcEditor or ArcInfo
Important note: Printing from ArcView and editing with Capturx for ArcGIS when ArcSDE data is not ‘registered as versioned’ will cause an error and data may inadvertently be stored incorrectly in ArcSDE. This is a known bug that will be addressed in our next released version of Capturx for ArcGIS.
A: This could occur for at two reasons:
- ArcGIS 9.X desktop is not installed on your computer. To fix this problem, install the ArcGIS desktop application before you install Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop.
- The installation may fail if ArcGIS 9.X desktop is installed, but .Net components from ESRI are not installed. If this occurred, you will see the Adapx dialogue box:
“ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 with .NET support not found on this system. Capturx built for ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop or later with .Net support to be installed"
Once this occurs, the installation of the Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop will roll back. To correct this situation, you will need to:
- Go to Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Unistall/Change.
- In the ArcGIS Setup dialogue, select Modify.
- From Options dialogue, select the .NET Support component.
- Select Next to complete the Installation.
Once this is done install Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop again.
A: You might not have used the print icon on the Capturx for ArcGIS extension toolbar (see the Printing Your Map and Legend section of the user manual). If you don’t use Capturx printing, pattern will not be added to the page. You can see that pattern has been added, if you examine the printed page closely the white spaces that appear in the Layout View. If pattern is not on the page, no digital ink will be collected in your pen and, consequently, changes won’t appear on your map.
A: Capturx for ArcGIS Desktop uses the printer selected for ArcMap. To select the printer you want, you need to change the printer for ArcMap.
A: This could happen for (2) reasons.
- This is most likely caused because you're drawing size requested is slightly larger than our standard sizes. To work around this issue resize your drawing to fall within the A0, A2 or A4 sizes.
- Capturx for ArcGIS 1.1 users may need to download an important Software update that needs to be installed, please click this link to begin the process: http://www.adapx.com/Support/Support-Alert-Printing.html
A: This error will occur if an icon was not picked or improperly picked before inking. It means that there are ink strokes recorded but since no action preceded the ink, the system doesn’t know what to do with the ink. Be sure and clearly mark/tick the icon for the legend item.
Q: Why does the data remain on the pen when I write on a printed map and dock the pen?
A: The most likely cause is that you are downloading to a PC that was not used to print the map. If you have this problem, the solution is to dock the pen to the PC that generated the printed map. You can identify the PC by looking at the small print at the edge of the map. In landscape, it will appear on the lower right corner. In portrait, it will appear on the lower left side of the printed page.
A: Go to the print and page setup dialog in ArcMap and make sure your Map Page Size units are set to ‘inches’. If you have the units set to ‘centimeters’, everything will be 2 ½ times the expected scale.
A: This can be caused by a known ArcMap application issue in ArcMap 9.2 that affects the printed map’s registration accuracy. This can happen if you resize the map frame manually in layout view before printing (by dragging an edge of the map frame). To correct this issue follow the below instructions or upgrade to ArcMap 9.3:
- Using the Window menu, open the table of contents window if it is closed.
- Select the Map name and double click on it within the table of contents window. This will open a dialogue box.
- Select the Data Frame tab and choose Fixed Extent on the radio control button for Extent.
- Click Apply and OK.
When you print your map again, the placement of the features on the map should improve.
Q: The polygon features I create using Capturx for ArcGIS are rendered in a strange way, especially when I zoom in. The fill color I would expect to see inside the polygon shape appears on the outside of the shape, covering the map, and the inside of the polygon is not filled in.
A: To avoid this problem, draw your polygon features on the printed map in a clockwise direction.
A: This is a known issue that will be addressed in the next version. Until that release, either re-open the edit-session on the target data-source and continue editing or deselect the Capturx extension.
Q: Why do I get a SQL error when I try to install or use the Capturx extension after I have not used it for a period of time? (Extended Question)
A: This can result from having your computer or SQL DB files set for compression. To ensure your SQL DB files are not compressed:
- Select the database folder causing the problem.
- Make sure the Compress Folder option is unchecked.
- Reboot your system and try installing or using the Capturx extension again.
If the problem continues, contact Adapx technical support for help.
A: Capturx for ArcGIS has a 50 character limit to the length on MXD names. Please check to make sure your MXD name meets the limitation before printing a digitally enabled map; this will ensure that you will not lose the ink in an edit session when docking your pen.
A: Go to the print and page setup dialog in ArcMap and make sure your Map Page Size units are set to ‘inches’. If you have the units set to ‘centimeters’, everything will be 2 ½ times the expected scale.
A: Check to see that the path name to the MXD is not too long or that there are not invalid characters in the path. Capturx for ArcGIS has a 50 character limit to the length on MXD names. Please check to make sure your MXD name meets the limitation before printing a digitally enabled map; this will ensure that you will not lose the ink in an edit session when docking your pen.
A: You can remove the unwanted ink by following these steps:

Q: I’m having trouble installing Capturx – receiving messages such as “the data cabinet file CAB1 is corrupt” or “another instance of the application is already running” or “insufficient rights to install the application.”
A: Trouble completing your Capturx installation or messages like these often reflect that your IT team has placed limits your ability to install software. Even though Adapx software is designed to install under almost all user privileges, strict security measures implemented at certain Government or Military locations, for example, can prevent a user from installing an application. In order to install the application the user will need to have their rights temporarily elevated. Please contact your IT administrator to check on the installation rights for your account.
